The "Ionic Department" (Dipartimento Jonico) is the only teaching and research department of the University of Bari that is located in the City of Taranto.

The Department has a total staff of 64 lecturers and 18 technical-administrative personnel. We are a community not very large but very, very active, consisting of students and professors who are living university life in close connection (albeit in the difference of roles).

Its Educational Offer consists of 6 Study Courses (3 Bachelor's Degree Courses and 3 Master's Degree Courses), 1 PhD Course, several Master, Short Master, Summer School, and Transversal Skills Courses.

The Department also benefits from the Erasmus+ activities of a Jean Monnet Chair for the period 2022-2025.

The PhD in "Mediterranean Rights, Economies and Cultures" has been active since the academic year 2016-2017, is characterised by the interdisciplinary nature of its courses and approaches, and combines a specific focus on the multiple needs of the territory with a constant reference to the global context.

Here's a list of Masters, Short Masters, Summer Schools and Transversal Skills Courses.

The Department's Research Activity is distributed among the different areas of law, economics and pedagogy; the Department aims to raise the quality of scientific research through the widest methodological and cultural openness, the dialogue between the different disciplines of origin and the ability to achieve high standards with respect to the criteria of national and international scientific communities of reference.

The Department holds many initiatives in the different disciplinary areas. Among other things, it has its own publishing collection (Edizioni DJSGE) consisting of the Annals, the Quaderni and the Simposia; there is also a series for monographs published by the Cacucci publishing house.

Extensive is the Department's so-called "Third Mission" Activity, which has a number of well-established relationships with local institutions and various private players.

The Department's Main Building is located in an old monastery (here’s the map). While the Law Courses are located in the Main Building, the Economics ones are located on the Campus “Luigi Notarnicola” (here), and the "Maritime" Course in the Taranto Naval Petty Officers School (here).
